Enneagram 3 - The Achiever

This is the third in a series of nine features that provides insight into each of the Enneagram types. Each feature provides an overview of the type, including how each type responds to stress and evolves in growth. It also includes insight for leaders to customize their approach of support, insight for people working with them to be more intentional partners, and reminders for those that identify with the specific type.


What are the characteristics of an Enneagram 3?

  • they are ambitious, charming, competent, energetic, and self-assured

  • they can be status conscious and overly focused on their drive for advancement

  • their basic fear is to be worthless and to not be valued

  • they are typically level and poised

  • they can be overly concerned with their image or what people think of them which can cause problems with workaholism and competitiveness


How do Enneagram 3s respond to stress and growth?


When Threes are stressed, they can take on the unhealthy qualities of a Nine

  • this can make them disengage and become apathetic or avoidant

When Threes are healthy, they can take on the healthy qualities of a Six

  • this can help them become cooperative and more considerate of supporting others


For leaders to know when working with Enneagram 3s

  • do what you say you’re going to do; they expect you to be as committed as they are

  • clearly define what success looks like; they are driven and value a clear finish line

  • recognize the work they do; they put a lot into it and really value recognition

  • let three’s shine; give them opportunity to rise up and shine their own light

  • don’t interrupt their flow of work, it will mess with the direction of their drive


For people to know when working with Enneagram 3s

  • they expect you to pull your weight and not drag them down

  • understand what their version of the goal or success looks like to best support them

  • let them know how awesome they are, they love to be recognized for their contribution

  • be authentic with them, if you try to one up them (without vibes on point) they will become very frustrated

  • they work in flow with clear direction toward a goal, be mindful of disruptions


For Enneagram 3s

  • there is a difference between who you are and what you do! Your work doesn’t define you!

  • boundaries are okay; no one will view you as less successful if you need help or are busy

  • others shining does not diminish your light; who could ever?!

  • things will come up so you’ll be well served to be add flexibility into your day to day

  • you don’t have to be ‘on’ and ‘perfect’ all the time, you’re only human
