    Frequently Asked Questions

    Who needs to be involved?

This is a facilitator-driven kit. You prepare on your own, then lead a small senior group, typically your finance lead, your people lead, and one or two other senior peers, through three waves of work. You facilitate; they shape the decisions.

What will we have when we finish?

A defined total compensation philosophy, structured decisions across every component (base pay, variable, equity, benefits, recognition), a way to apply it to your actual roles, and a decision framework for the compensation choices that keep coming. Your work publishes to your own Notion.

What does the kit actually teach?

How to design total compensation as a deliberate system rather than something assembled by accident: defining what your organization values, translating that into each component of pay, and applying it coherently to the people doing the work. It gives you the framework to teach, the structure to plan, and the templates your group fills in.

    How long does it take?

This runs across multiple weeks, not one sitting, usually three to six weeks of elapsed time. Expect two to four hours of your own prep, then three to five senior-group sessions of about ninety minutes, plus time for any benchmark research. Pace depends on how often your group can convene.

Do I need anything in place before I start?

Yes, one thing. You should already have a clear organizational ecosystem, a defined level and track structure or equivalent, so compensation has something coherent to attach to. If you do not have that yet, we strongly recommend completing Designing Your Org Ecosystem first, or doing the equivalent work in some other form.

Is this a salary calculator that tells me what to pay?

No. It will not hand you numbers. It is the deeper work of defining your compensation philosophy and the structured decisions behind each component, so the numbers you set are coherent, defensible, and yours. It gives you the how, not a fill-in-the-blank figure.

Do I need compensation benchmark data?

It helps, and the kit assumes you will either have access to benchmark data or be willing to acquire it during the work. You do not need it perfectly in hand on day one, but plan for some external benchmarking as part of the process.
