Write job descriptions that actually say what the role is and what good looks like.

Job Descriptions 101 creates a job description framework that makes every role clear: what it is, what good looks like, and how it connects to the rest of your people systems. With it, your descriptions guide hiring and performance instead of sitting in a drawer.

What you'll do in this kit:

    • Take an honest read on how job descriptions work in your organization today
    • Learn what every job description must contain and how the system stays alive
    • Make structured decisions about ownership, cadence, taxonomy, and tone
    • Draft or update descriptions against your real roles
    • Connect job descriptions to the rest of your people systems
    • Set a maintenance approach that keeps them durable as roles change

    Complete this kit to create:

    • A job description framework and an applied first pass against your current roles
    • A maintenance approach that keeps descriptions accurate as you grow

    Frequently Asked Questions

    Who needs to be involved?

This is a facilitator-driven kit. You prepare on your own, then lead a small senior group, the peers closest to hiring, performance, and how roles get shaped, through two waves: one to lock the framework, one to apply it to your real roles.

What will we have when we finish?

A defined job description framework (what a JD is for, what every one must contain, who owns it, how it stays current), plus an applied first pass against your real roles, either refreshed descriptions or first drafts where none existed, and a maintenance approach. Your work publishes to your own Notion.

What does the kit actually teach?

How to treat job descriptions as a system, not a pile of one-off documents: what a JD is and is not, the anatomy every one shares, and how descriptions connect to leveling, pay, hiring, performance, and onboarding. You will learn to build a framework that keeps every role definition honest as you grow.

    How long does it take?

This runs across multiple weeks, not one sitting, roughly three to five weeks. Expect two to four hours of your own prep, then two to four senior-group sessions of about ninety minutes, depending on how many descriptions you refresh in the applied wave.

Do I need anything in place before I start?

Yes. You should already have a clear organizational ecosystem (levels and tracks) and a working compensation framework, or at least a clear sense of how pay maps to levels, so your descriptions attach to something stable. If those are not in place, we recommend Designing Your Org Ecosystem and Designing Your Total Compensation first, or the equivalent work.

Is this a library of job description templates?

No. It is the framework for building descriptions that fit your organization, what every JD must contain, who owns the system, and how it stays alive, rather than generic templates you would have to force your roles into.

The name says 101. Is it too basic?

The fundamentals of what a job description is for, and how it connects to the rest of your people systems, are exactly where most organizations drift. It is called 101 because it sets the foundation, not because it is only for beginners. It is still senior, facilitator-led work.
